China Train Tickets Sold Out? A Foreigner's Guide to Waitlists and Alternatives

A train search showing no seats can mean several different things. Your travel date may not be on sale, the class you selected may be unavailable, or a booking service may still be trying to obtain a ticket. Start by identifying the state of your booking before changing the rest of your trip.

Quick answer

A pending request or paid waitlist is not an issued ticket. Check the official sale window and order status, complete the required identity checks, then compare a waitlist with alternatives you could actually use. If your next hotel or flight depends on the journey, set a decision deadline rather than waiting indefinitely.

This guide covers ordinary mainland rail bookings, with Golden Week as a demanding planning scenario. Cross-border services can have separate rules. It does not show live availability or predict your chance of getting a seat.

First, identify what the screen means

StateWhat it means for your planYour next step
Not yet on saleNo ordinary ticket has been released for you to buy yet.Check the sale date and the departure station’s release time.
No tickets for your selectionThe particular date, route or class has no available ticket in that search.Check other usable options and official waitlisting.
Third-party request pendingThe service is still processing or trying to book.Read its status and cancellation terms; do not assume issuance.
Waitlist paidYou have funded a request for a matching ticket.Monitor the order and retain an alternative plan.
Ticket issuedA ticket has been obtained.Verify the passenger, date, train, stations and class.

Do not use an estimated success percentage as a substitute for an issued ticket.

Check the ordinary 15-day sale window

China Railway’s published sales rules give an ordinary advance-sale period of 15 days including the travel date. For example, under that rule a journey on October 7 enters the window on September 23. The calendar date alone is not the precise release time: use the station’s listing on 12306’s sale-window enquiry.

A third party accepting your request earlier does not mean the ordinary railway ticket has already been issued. Railway notices and the actual train listing take precedence if arrangements change.

For a traveler reading this on September 30, the ordinary window already includes October 1–7. An unavailable holiday journey is therefore not generally solved by waiting for its first sale date, though the specific train’s status still needs checking.

Passport verification and waitlist eligibility are separate checks

Foreign passports are among the identity documents accepted in the official sales rules. Use the passenger details that match the document, and follow the official foreign-passport name and number instructions for unusual names or punctuation.

The 12306 waitlist FAQ separately requires identity consistency verification before using waitlisting. A registered account or the ability to search trains is not proof that every required check is complete.

If your account cannot complete the process, read its verification message and contact official support or a staffed railway ticket window with your original passport. Do not invent a document number or borrow another person’s identity. Interface options can differ: this guide does not promise that every feature is available in every language view.

How to use a waitlist without losing track of your trip

The official Chinese term is 候补. Use it to recognize the function, then follow the current prompts rather than assuming a particular button layout.

  1. Choose only dates, trains and classes you are genuinely willing to take. Check the station names as well as the city.
  2. Complete the required verification and payment steps. Review the request’s status to ensure it is active.
  3. Choose an expiry compatible with your plans. Your own decision deadline may need to be earlier than the latest time the system permits.
  4. Check the order itself for the result, rather than relying only on a notification.
  5. If your plans change or you secure another ticket, review and cancel unwanted pending requests so they do not later produce a journey you no longer need.

Under the official FAQ, waitlisting uses a prepayment. If no ticket is obtained and the request ends, that prepayment is refunded under the rules; an issued ticket instead follows ticket change and refund conditions. Do not assume all third-party charges follow the same terms or that refunds arrive instantly.

Search alternatives in a useful order

Try another departure time or acceptable class first. A less convenient but confirmed train may fit better than a speculative connection. Check the complete fare and whether the arrival time works for your accommodation.

Then check other stations serving the same cities. Similar names do not mean neighboring stations. Include travel to the departure station and from the arrival station when comparing options.

Consider a connection only if both legs are workable. Check whether a station change is involved, allow transfer time and confirm both tickets. One issued leg does not make an unconfirmed second leg safe to rely on.

Compare another day, a flight, or staying longer. Include airports, transfers, baggage, hotel changes and cancellation terms. There is no universal cheapest or fastest substitute. Do not cancel an existing workable option until the replacement is sufficiently confirmed for your plan.

Do not plan to board without a valid ticket or rely on buying a short segment and staying aboard beyond it.

When should you stop waiting?

Work backward from the next commitment you cannot miss. If a waitlisted train is meant to connect to an international flight, an alternative that gets you to the departure city earlier may be worth more than preserving a sightseeing day.

For a flexible day trip, abandoning the journey can be the better option. Our Golden Week itinerary guide explains how to simplify the wider plan. Save your ticket details and exact station address offline, carry the original document used to book, and keep a working connection for status checks. Use the China connectivity guide or eSIM comparison if mobile data is still unprepared.

Questions travelers ask

Can the station sell me a seat that is unavailable online?

Staff can help clarify your options and account issues, but do not travel to a station on the assumption that it can create availability. Bring the original document if you need in-person help.

Does paying for a booking service guarantee a ticket?

No pending request should be treated as a guarantee. Read what the service has promised, its fees and cancellation conditions, and look for actual issuance.

Can I count on sitting with my companions?

Do not assume a request guarantees adjacent seats. Review the seats assigned if tickets are issued, and choose options your group can accept.

Is this only useful during Golden Week?

No. The distinction between a search result, a request and an issued ticket applies year-round. For the holiday context and 2026 dates, see our Golden Week travel guide.
